Key Stage 4 Destinations; 2017-18

Description

This dataset, provided by the Department for Education, displays measures that give clear and comparable information on the success of schools in helping young people continue in education, employment or apprenticeships.

The data shows the 2017-18 destination of the 2016-17 KS4 cohort. To count as a ‘sustained’ destination, the young person has to be participating for two terms or six months of the following academic year. Destinations are defined as;

  • Any sustained education or employment destination. Pupils who were recorded as being in continuous education or employment between October 2016 and March 2017 and pupils who spent at least six consecutive months in an apprenticeship at any point in the year.
  • Sustained apprenticeship: Young people were counted as being on an apprenticeship if they participated in relevant learning for at least six consecutive months at any point in the destination year. Apprenticeships are newly reported as a primary destination, separately from education and employment categories.
  • Employment destinations include pupils recorded as having sustained employment by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC); pupils identified as self-employed, and all types of sustained employment and training activity recorded in the National Client Caseload Information Service (NCCIS) for the first two terms (October to March). It also includes pupils sustaining participation through a combination of education and employment.
  • Not recorded as a sustained destination: includes pupils who did not sustain a destination from October to March but had some participation between August and July. It also includes pupils who had no participation in education or employment but had claimed out-of-work benefits or were recorded NEET by their local authority between August and July.

Data is presented as a proportion of the number of pupils at the end of KS4 (Dudley; 3,400. Sandwell; 3,511. Walsall; 3,091. Wolverhampton; 2,441).

Commentary

Destinations of Black Country KS4 pupils are largely in line with the national average. The vast majority of young people continue in education, with most Dudley and Sandwell residents attending an FE college and most Walsall and Wolverhampton residents enrolling into Sixth Form.
