Summary of Findings
This report, developed by UK Active, was informed via Freedom of information requests that were sent to all local authorities in England in relation to publicly owned residential care homes. Of those authorities that provided information:

- 21% said their care homes had a dedicated strategy to support residents reaching the recommended levels of physical activity

- 38% said their care homes had a broader strategy to promote health and wellbeing, which included specific provisions for physical activity

- 25% said their care homes specifically measured how much physical activity residents take part in

- 33% confirmed care home staff are trained on the benefits of physical activity.

Further research found that "supporting over-65s to meet recommended exercise guidelines could save the NHS more than £12bn in treatment costs and prevent up to 600,000 major diseases such as heart disease, dementia, type-II diabetes and cancers over the next decade, as well as creating substantial social care savings".

Implications
Evidences the potential to further the knowledge base of the workforce in residential care homes around the benefits of activity. The older age care packs distributed by Active Black Country will be evaluated to assess their impact and findings will be communicated to care providers.
