Summary of Findings
SweatCoin is a digital platform that allows users to track their activity and earn virtual currency. A sample of 5,406 SweatCoin users were selected and their step counts each month were monitored. Additionally 678 participants responded to a survey designed to collect demographic and activity information.
After analysing the data the researchers found an overall average increase in daily step count of 19.5% over the 6-months following registration. Additionally those with higher BMI were more likely to have a significant increase in activity when compared to the rest of the participants.
Implications
Evidence of the impact of financial incentives on levels of physical activity especially on those with a higher BMI.
