Summary of Findings
In this piece of research participants opted in to the study by downloading a mood tracking app, it was therefore open to the public. The app asked participants questions about their mood/life satisfaction and their activity levels as well as passively recording activity levels through the device's accelerometer.
After analysing the data, the researchers found that both self reported and passively recorded physical activity levels were linked to happiness with those more active likely to be happier. This seemed to be true for all physical activity, not only exercise.
Implications
The link between activity levels and mental health is well-established and this research adds to a growing body of evidence. Work is ongoing to develop clear pathways to activity for healthcare professionals to be able to make patient referrals.
