Summary of Findings
1,206 individuals were selected from an existing wider study. They undertook MRI scans as well as walking endurance tests and cognitive ability tests. The researchers then analysed the data collected to see if any links could be made.
They found that participants with a higher physical fitness (calculated using the walking tests) had better cognitive performance across a number of the areas tested and preserved white matter microstructure. This led them to conclude that physical fitness is beneficial in relation to brain health.
Implications
Potential evidence that physical activity is beneficial for brain health.
