Summary of Findings
Data was collected using a questionnaire distributed to UK residents who worked in the sport, leisure, and fitness industry. The questions collected demographic data along with information used to assess an respondent's mental, physical and psychological wellbeing.
Overall mental health scores were relatively comparable to the national average; this remained true when demographic factors were applied. Mental wellbeing scores were lower in participants reporting poor support from managers, perceived unfair treatment, lack of job security and employers not taking positive action towards employee wellbeing.
When considering gender as a factor, researchers found that females reported a higher prevalence of physical/mental health conditions, perceived discrimination and were more likely to report continuing to work when feeling unwell.
The researchers were keen to note that these correlations don't necessarily represent a causal link, referencing the possibility of bi-directional causal pathway. They do however recognise whatever the cause, this piece provides an opportunity for the sector to make improvements.
Implications
This study raises concerns about the wellbeing of staff within the sport, leisure and fitness industry. It provides areas for improvement specifically around inclusivity and employee support.
